Checking the operation of the fan – Golf 4 and Bora

Fan failure

The radiator fan turns on only at high engine loads. In the event of its damage, you do not have to give up driving. Allow the engine to cool down and continue driving at a moderate speed, preferably to the nearest workshop. Avoid driving very slowly and idling the engine, because then there is negligible flow of cooling air around the radiator plates. Keep the temperature gauge and indicator light in view.

attention. Under no circumstances put your hands near the fan when the engine is still hot. The fan may start even after the ignition is turned off.

Checking the operation of the fan:

1. Start by checking the fuses no 3 i 8.

2. Pull out the electrical connector plug from the thermal switch, located on the left side, halfway up the radiator.

3. Turn on the ignition.

4. Connect the clamp 2 (+) with clamp 1 (white-red wire): fan turns slowly. Now connect the clamp (+) with clamp 3 (Red-black, sometimes a red-yellow wire): the fan turns fast. If the fan rotates in both cases, it means that the thermal switch needs to be replaced.

5. When the fan in both cases does not start to rotate, or it only works at one speed, then it is necessary to check the electrical connections according to the diagram. Check all connectors, that they are not loose.

6. Alternatively, you also need to check the fan relay. It is located on the right side, on the last 13. place, in the bottom row of the additional rail, above the main board of the relays. After bridging the thermal switch, the relay contacts should close. Also check under the bonnet, front left, that the connectors are not loose 4- and 10-pin fan and control device.

7. You can check the fan motor, by removing the plug with the power cord from it and connecting instead to the contact with the red-black wire, the wire connected directly to the positive terminal of the battery. For contact with brown wire (in the engine 2,3 V5 – brownish black) connect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. If now the fan does not start to rotate, it means, that the fan motor is defective, which needs to be replaced.
